The Anglican Rosary

As we know, Martin Luther separated from the Catholic Church during the Reformation. However, he continued to promote the Catholic Rosary as a form of devotion. Nevertheless, praying the Catholic Rosary diminished among protestants.

In the 1980s, a Texas contemplative prayer group instituted the Anglican Rosary. The Anglican Rosary differs from the Catholic Rosary in that it does not honor Mary or focus solely on the life of Jesus and Mary.

Some of the many prayers used with its beads are based upon the sayings or teaching of Jesus, the liturgical year, or even the Psalms. The Anglican Rosary uses prayer beads, combined with contemplation, to bring us into the presence of God. The touching of each successive bead is an aid for keeping our mind from wandering and helps lead us into a still state necessary for contemplation.

How to Pray the Anglican Rosary

The Cross

  1. In the Name of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

  2. Say the Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

The Invitatory

O God, make speed to save me (us),

O Lord, make haste to help me (us),

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Cruciforms

Holy God,

Holy Almighty,

Holy Immortal One,

Have mercy upon me (us).

The Weeks

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,

Have mercy on me, a sinner.

The Cross

In the Name of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen
